WHY DOES MY WEIGHT FLUCTUATE

If you've been dieting for a while you will probably have experienced weight fluctuations. It's annoying if you have a weight target in mind and the scales seem to point further away from your goal. Diets can look easy on paper, but in real life they can seem impossible to follow. Diets can also impose a strict regime that may be just too difficult to fit into your lifestyle. Expectations might be high at the start, and you may feel fed up when the weight doesn't fall off. But keep in mind that weight gain didn't happen overnight, so how can you expect it to disappear in a few days. During our weight loss, we noticed our weight could fluctuate
for various reasons, and sometimes we were quite surprised by how much the weight fluctuated.
We found our own solution to weight loss - using a method that suited us over the last two years. After losing 7 stone between us, you may think we don't worry about weight or that our weight problem has gone away. But, due to the way we have lost the weight, we have equipped ourselves with a new lifestyle that continues to help us keep the weight off. We are not afraid to eat what we want and we understand that weight will fluctuate. From experience, I have a feeling that women's weight fluctuates more than mens.
No matter what method of weight loss you choose, the weight should come off if you are eating LESS than your normal recommended daily intake. The problem with most 'diets' are they are so restrictive, and when there's a crisis no matter how big or small, there is no room for error. The next thing you know, you give up and gain the weight back - often very quickly.
Over the two years we have been following our method of weight loss, we have found our weight fluctuates for many reasons. Sometimes the weight 'gain' has surprised us. Yet, over the week, it all seems to settle down. Weighing yourself every day is not a good idea because it can drive you to despair (and the biscuit tin). While we were losing the weight, we chose to weigh ourselves more often than was necessary so we could get a sense of the weight fluctuations. Weighing yourself once a week should be enough, that's what everyone tells us, but in reality, it's difficult not to stand on the scales every day, sometimes more than once. Weight doesn't just go down in one straight line. You can weigh more in the evening than you did in the morning, depending on your exercise, food and drink.
In our experience we found the following caused our weight to fluctuate upwards:
  • After exercise (this one surprised us most)
  • Eating salty foods
  • Dehydration - not drinking enough water
When you know you are eating less - like we did, and the weight appears to be going up, don't despair. We put our 'weight gain' down to water retention because we knew that we had not consumed the additional 3,600 calories needed to gain one pound of fat. We all have a calorie allowance - do you know yours?
We lost weight eating all the food on this blog.
Why not take a look at  what we were eating. We chose a method of weight loss that allowed us to eat everything from burger and chips (often thought of as unhealthy) to salads and pasta. While most 'diets' rely on the TYPE of food eaten to be successful, our method focused on eating the food we love.
We like to post our main meals to show you what CAN be eaten. You won’t find us posting every last morsel though – but we hope this gives you an idea of how far calories can go!
